FAQ'S for Microlock and Sisterlock™ Install

  1. How long does the install take?

We don't know exactly how long your install will take. Installs are scheduled for 12 hour sessions, and the time it takes is based on hair length, parting size, starting method, density, head size etc. We will book the install for an estimated amount of days and you will need to be available for 12hours each day.

  1. How many locs will I have?

We don't know how many locs you will have until your loctician is finished with the install. Loc count is determined by parting size, head size and density. At the end of your install, your loctician will count your locs and let you know how many you have.

We don't install by loc count, we install by part size. So we can't give you an exact number of locs.

  1. What is the install schedule?

Consecutive days, 12 hour sessions. For example: If your install, is a two day install, it will be 2 consecutive days for 12 hours each day. Of course all the time may not be needed so your loctician will adjust the schedule as they see fit.

  1. Will my locs look like her locs?

No, everyone's hair is different, therefore everyone's journey is different. Try not to compare your hair to anyone else's.

  1. Will my hair be full and thick with loes?

Your hair will continue to grow as it does when you are loose natural. Having locs does not change how your hair grows. Your texture and hair type will remain the same the difference is now it's in a matted state with locs rather than loose with loose natural hair. If you have thick hair you will have thick locs if you have thin hair you will have thin locs. If you have thin hair you can get a bricklayered grid to have more scalp coverage.

  1. Will my locs break?

It depends on how you take care of your hair. Los can break for many reasons, such as; chemical damage, improper interlocking, poor maintenance, and thinning.

Thinning can be caused by stress, medication, heredity…etc. Please see a doctor if inexplicable breakage from the scalp occurs. Your loctician is not a doctor and can not do anything about your hair falling out from your scalp.

  1. When can I dye my hair?

It is best to dye your hair before your install. If you choose to wait, then it will depend on how your hair is taking to the locing process. Your loctition will let you know when it is okay to dye your hair.

  1. How long will it take my hair to loc?

On Average, short curl patterns take 6-8 months, and medium to long take 9 months to 1 year, but It depends on your lifestyle and hair type.


  1. What is slippage/unraveling?

Slippage or unraveling is what happens when the twist, coil, braid or interlock comes undone from the ends or from the root. This can happen for many reasons such as excessive moisture like water or sweat, smooth textured hair, loose curl patterns, product use etc. It is normal to experience slippage around the perimeter and some hair types will experience more slippage than other hair types.

Your loctician will go over ways to help prevent or minimize the amount of slippage you could have.

  1. Can I go swimming?

It is not recommended during the beginning of your locing process because it may cause unraveling or slippage.

If you would like to go swimming a hair wrap or swim cap is recommended.

  1. Will I be able to take it out?

* Yes you can take it down. It may be a difficult process, but it is possible.

  1. How much is a retightening?

To get the current pricing please ask your loctician during the consultatio.

  1. How long does retightening take?

The average retightening time is 3 hours, however, you will learn your retightening time and schedule with your first follow up appointment.

  1. Do you shampoo?

* Yes

  1. What if I work out at lot?

You should tie your hair up and cleanse with seabreeze between sessions.


  1. Can I use product?

It is not recommended to use product with micro sized locs because it can cause slippage and build up. However if you would like to use product, make sure to cleanse with a cleanser such as seabreeze.

  1. What can you do about my bald/thinning spots?

* Unfortunately, I will not be able to do anything about those troubled areas, however, you can do certain styles to help hide those spots. I would definitely recommend seeing a dermatologist for further help and instruction.

  1. Do you do extensions?

* Microlock/Traditional loc extensions; we do not recommend or offer loc extensions.

  1. Will they be heavy?

Locs tend to grow twice in size, and as they mat down and lock up they will gain weight . As they grow longer you can get them trimmed to your desired length.

  1. Is it safe to wear a wig?

You can wear a wig over your locs if you chose to, however, I don't recommend wearing a wig over your locs unless they are glueless, because the glue can mess up the locs around the edges.

  1. Can I get braids over my locs?

Because it can damage your locs

  1. When will my first follow up appointment be?

* The average follow up is 6 weeks
